Donna Vakalis

Donna Vakalis - Olympic Pentathlete

Donna Vakalis started as a competitive swimmer at age six.  She then progressed into the sport of Modern Pentathlon and has competed internationally since 2007.  Donna is one of only two Canadians to qualify for the 2012 Olympics in Modern Pentathlon.

She was the Gold medalist at the 2012 Guatemala Open and has taken home numerous individual silver and bronze medals internationally, including a bronze medal in the relay event at the Hungarian World Cup.

Vakalis has a bachelor of arts and science degree from McMaster University, a professional Masters of Architecture degree from University of Toronto (U of T). Currently, she holds a variety of teaching and research positions at U of T, where she is currently pursuing her PhD in Civil Engineering in Health & Sustainable Cities.  Donna is interested in co-benefits of high performance urban systems and environmentally sustainable urban design.

Mylene Paquett

Mylène Paquette - Professional Athlete, Ocean Rower

Only 396 people have managed to cross the oceans in the world rowing, including six Canadians. Two men in solitary and four other people that crewed Mylène herself! January 12 to March 10, 2010, she was part of a team of six rowers having covered the 2800 nautical miles between Morocco and Barbados. During this trip she accumulated more than 680 hours of rowing in 58 days.

During this first trip, Mylène was the only American, French and woman aboard the boat, so she had an opportunity to tame her loneliness. While her teammates coveted Barbados, Mylène coveted the North Atlantic. The first crossing was a stage for her to gain the experience necessary to leave alone. 

This first crossing's perfect preparation technique has developed her endurance and given her the confidence to one day face the ocean alone. The comments she could make during the crossing have strengthened the conviction of Mylène that it is essential to protect the oceans. 

"I hardly hide my excitement of being part of another event of this magnitude. When I discovered the train ocean, a few years ago, I immediately knew that it would one day be my turn to throw myself on the ocean alone. Steve Montador

Steve Montador - NHL Hockey Player

Undrafted, Steve Montador played in the Ontario Hockey League with the North Bay Centennials, Erie Otters and the Peterborough Petes. Montador was signed by the Calgary Flames as a free agent and spent time playing for the Saint John Flames out of the American Hockey League. Montador made his Calgary debut during the 2001-2002 NHL Season playing 11 games and scoring a goal and two assists for three points. Over the next two season, Steve played 76 more regular season games for Calgary and played 20 games in the 2003–2004 NHL Playoffs which saw Calgary reach the Stanley Cup finals only to lose to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

During the 2004-2005 season, Montador was one of many NHL players to play in Europe, playing for French outfit Mulhouse. Early in the 2005-2006 season on December 2, 2005, Steve was traded by the Flames along with Dustin Johner to the Florida Panthers. Noted for his gritty defensive style, Montador's best season came in 2007-2008, when he had career bests with eight goals and 23 points in 73 games with Florida.

In the 2008-2009 season, Montador was signed as a free agent to a one-year deal by the Anaheim Ducks on July 11, 2008. On March 4, 2009, he was traded by the Ducks at the trade deadline to the Boston Bruins for Petteri Nokelainen. Montador played in 11 post-season games helping the Bruins reach the conference semi-finals. On July 1, 2009, Steve signed a 2 year, free agent deal with the Buffalo Sabres. His rights were traded to the Chicago Blackhawks for a seventh round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft on June 29, 2011.

Luke’s imminent success started when he was a youth, Canada’s most highly touted sailing prospect. He lived up to his hype, becoming the 2006 Youth World Champion. From there Luke began rising through the ranks in the Laser class, winning several senior National Championship titles. In 2011, Luke was presented with the opportunity to sail with Mike Leigh, one of Canada’s top Laser sailors, in the 470 Class. I just want to tell you how impressed I am with your bars. I discovered them two days ago at the Coffee Tree cafe and could not believe my eyes when I read the nutritional info chart on the back of the package. I haven't eaten protein bars before, but I had to change my diet recently, and one of the snack recommendations was a protein bar. I didn't like all the extra ingredients (what I call "crap") in the recommended ones or the high number of calories in most of them. It was also extremely difficult to find good organic ones. Plus, the organic ones tended to be all nuts and dried fruit: a yummy combination, but too high in fat and sugar for me. So, when my parents told me about your bars and gave me a sample, it was a relief. Your Simply Bars don't bump up my calorie count and leave me hungry; they're tasty and I've discovered a good burst of fuel for the brain. I enrolled in National Novel Writing Month and spent the month of November writing my novel. I discovered that eating half a bar of cocoa raspberry (I think the cocoa was definitely key) before I sat down made it easier to write and to stick the course until I'd finished my chapter for the day.
